Self-referral to the GMC: what should GP locums keep in mind?

Dr Morenike Odanye, medicolegal consultant at Medical Protection, discusses when you need to refer yourself to the GMC. 

Being subject to an investigation by the regulator can be a source of considerable stress for doctors and is an experience that most would wish to avoid.

There are multiple avenues through which a GP locum can become subject to an investigation, including through a complaint from patients or other members of the public, a referral from an employer or responsible officer, or via other investigatory offices, such as the coroner, ombudsman, or police.
