Starting out as a GP locum: how to choose which practices to work at in your area

When newly-qualified as a GP and looking for the surgery to locum in, it can be both exciting and daunting. You are now a ‘free’ agent to choose any surgery of your choice. No longer are you subject to a rota co-ordinator choosing your location and shifts. Having this freedom and the World as your feet brings with it many options and many questions. Being a locum gives you that luxury of choosing where you want to be with no strings attached.

You may do your research by talking to other GPs, talking to non-GP friends, or checking local surgery patient satisfaction scores (!). You may already have some places in mind i.e., the surgery where you trained (common and in fact what I did).

I have worked in many different surgeries and along the way, cultivated my own pros and cons for different surgeries, which I will share with you.

Starting out as a GP locum

"I have already managed to get some locum sessions via LocumDeck and I have now been generating invoices with ease by using the online system. It has been amazing! It is great to have all your paperwork in one place and this makes life easier for the practices as well as for yourself."
