GPs have been invited to join an NASGP workshop that will feed into the national consultation on the NHS 10-Year Plan.

‘Change NHS’ is an open consultation by the current government to seek the views of the workforce and the public.

The agency running the consultation, Thinks, have sought views on:

  • The future of technology in NHS primary care.
  • Opportunities in community care such as virtual wards, diagnostic hubs and ambulance triage.
  • Preventative medicine such as lifestyle interventions and advice.

As the membership organisation for sessional GPs, we are keen to make sure that the NHS receives feedback on this from the perspective of GP locums and salaried GPs.

NASGP chair Dr Richard Fieldhouse will host a virtual workshop from 7.30pm to 8.30pm on Wednesday 5 February. Dr Fieldhouse will then collate responses from the workshop and feed them back to the Department for Health and Social Care, who are leading the ‘Change NHS’ project.

Dr Fieldhouse said: “All too often sessional GPs, particularly those working in a GP locum role, are seen as a problem in the eyes of the NHS whereas, as the membership organisation for sessional GPs, we see our members as part of the solution.

“Working across multiple practices, in a diverse range of neighbourhoods, supporting an eclectic mix of communities, often in a position of enforced underperformance, no other group of GPs has such privileged access to such a wide range of NHS systems, processes and services.

“Rather than correcting our own homework, we are able to feed back as highly experienced clinicians on the front line, giving our perspective from multiple points of view. I hope anyone who has some spare-time on the evening of the 5th February will be able to come along and make a contribution.”

"After finally deciding to fully engage with NASGP and to join the NASGP BOB Locum Chambers I could now not be happier with every aspect of my professional life. I have incredible flexibility and have a great group of different GP practices to work with – including some who are happy to use me whenever I am available. I really enjoy and get a lot from our monthly meetings and the team makes my admin, invoicing and pension applications as straightforward as possible. I can truly say that I am in the tiny minority of GPs who love their job, have total control of my workload and have minimal stress, working only in great GP practices. I will happily remain with NASGP as long as I want to."
