BMA schedules new online meeting for underemployed sessional GPs

The British Medical Association’s sessional GP subcommittee has scheduled an open online event for sessional GPs next month, according to its latest newsletter.

On Thursday 16 October, GPs can meet the subcommittee to report on their experiences of under- and unemployment, poor working conditions and challenges for work-life balance around the country.

GPs can register for free online.

The subcommittee has recently added two new members: Dr Amy Small, and Dr Kim Rollinson, both experienced GPs and leaders in the sector.

Dr Fieldhouse said: “The British Medical Association’s decision to schedule this open meeting is a welcome and crucial step towards national action on the worsening sessional GP underemployment crisis . We have been covering the severe lack of work for our members for well over a year now, and the situation is increasingly urgent.

“It is frankly ridiculous that while patients face lengthy waits, more than one in four sessional GPs are actively looking for work, reporting significant unused clinical capacity. We estimated that sessional GPs could deliver millions of additional appointments annually if this capacity were properly utilised.

“These experienced colleagues, often ex-partners, offer invaluable insights across multiple practices, acting as crucial workforce stability partners. The Government must now deliver on the calls for urgent emergency funding and remove the unnecessary restrictions on the ARRS scheme to allow practices to hire the GPs they desperately need.”

"I have been very happy doing part-time locum work since retiring from partnership and this has definitely been helped by NASGP's LocumDeck, through which I have arranged all my work so far. "
