‘Starting out as a GP locum’ guide updated for GPs for 2025/26

NASGP’s handbook, sponsored by MPS, has had an update for 2026. A must-read for new and would-be locums.

Members can download the handbook from the NASGP website: https://www.nasgp.org.uk/handbooks

The guide is a practical, confidence-building guide for doctors considering sessional work, written by locums who understand the realities of starting out.

It walks through what to expect and how to prepare – from registration and paperwork to finding work, setting terms, and working safely and sustainably as an independent GP.

Produced by NASGP in partnership with Medical Protection, the guide combines professional insight with real-world experience, helping new and newly-qualified GPs avoid common pitfalls and build strong foundations from day one.

"I have found LocumDeck to be the most helpful and invaluable resource for keeping bookings and accounts. I want to thank you for the wonderful service you provide. Many thanks once again for all the NASGP provides, and particularly for use of the excellent resource LocumDeck has proved to be – something I have recommended to many colleagues who have taken a step to locum work."
