FAQ: How often do GPs need to do child safeguarding training?
All GPs require Level 3 Safeguarding Children training to meet national Intercollegiate standards.
- Frequency: You must hold a valid Level 3 certificate, renewed every three years.
- Annual Refresh: National guidance now requires you to document a yearly update—such as a case review, webinar, or reflective log—in your annual appraisal portfolio.
National bodies (RCGP, RCN, and RCPCH) no longer require you to count a specific number of training hours. Instead, the focus is on quality of reflection over quantity of hours.
Under the new ‘Life Course’ model, your learning should ideally cover the whole family context.
