Future of general practice has invisible upsides for GP locums, NASGP chair promises

Dr Richard Fieldhouse discussed the future of general practice in 2020 and 2021 in an RCGP talk on Tuesday 22 September 2020.

Wellbeing, working patterns and career priorities were all top of the agenda, with Richard explaining how Locum Chambers and Balint groups support GPs’ wellbeing at work.

Richard also explained how the Covid-19 pandemic has disrupted GP locum work, challenges UK locums have faced, and the invisible upsides to the situation that NASGP members have shared with him since March.

“We’ve all had to absolutely hit the ground running with IT, with some amazing successes,” he said.

“I’m particularly concerned about risk management, and if we’re going to see a big rise in complaints as the dust settles and we go into next spring/summer. Telemedicine … has been a brilliant solution in many ways but it could have also created some problems too.”

Newly-qualified GPs who are members of the Royal College of GPs (RCGP) are now eligible for free NASGP membership, and all RCGP members are eligible for a 50% discount on Membership Plus. Find out more.

"A must-have for any GP locum.

I have used NASGP website since I started locuming three years ago. It caters for all my locum needs, and I found LocumDeck particularly useful for bookings and invoicing. The automatically-generated invoices and pension forms save me countless hours of admin time every month, and the recently introduced e-signed forms are brilliant.

The assistance I have received has always been quick and helpful. The forums and updates have also kept me in the loop with important issues which may affect my practice.

I cannot recommend this website enough. "
