NAAT testing is now available for gonorrhoea*
- Men – send a 1st pass urine for NAAT testing or a urethral swab for microscopy.
- Women – you need both an endocervical and a urethral swab for microscopy. When NAAT testing is available, we’ll be able to just do an HVS (urine NAAT testing isn’t sensitive enough in women).
- For both men and women, do rectal and pharyngeal swabs as the history indicates.
Treatment is in reality going to be done through GU, but would normally be ceftriaxone 500mg im stat and azithromycin 1g PO stat. The guideline lists alternatives depending on the site of infection, allergies and pregnancy etc.
*NB, QA (Portsmouth) is doing it only on urines, not on swabs, Winchester and Southampton are not yet doing it at all. What’s happening in your chambers area?
