Esmya and Contraceptives

This guideline lays out advice concerning contraception and Esmya. Esmya is 5mg of Ulipristal acetate. It is a new treatment for fibroids used for up to 3m pre-operatively. Ella-One is the other Ulipristal medication, which is used for emergency contraception and is 30mg.

The leaflet for Esmya advises that it should not be used with any hormonal contraception (including mirena, depot and nexplanon). This is far more restrictive than the guidance for Ella-One, so at some point it may change, but for now, FSRH advises following the leaflet advice.
