Press Release 18 January 1999

Non-Principals eligibility to stand for GPC

The NASGP has welcomed the General Practitioners’ Committee (GPC) latest move to allow all GPs to stand for election to the GPC by calling for all non-principals to register with their local LMCs. Dr Richard Fieldhouse, chairman of the NASGP, said “ We’re very happy to see that the GPC have moved on the LMC conference policy in allowing non-principals to stand for election. However, we still await a change in legislation that will pave the way for non-principals to be allowed to participate in the structures and voting processes of LMCs. Until this happens, non-principals will still not have equal professional representation”.

Dr Peter Harvey, NASGP secretary, said “Although LMCs have no statutory requirement or provision to enable this registration to take place, there is absolutely nothing to stop them from taking the initiative and imaginatively including non-principals and suggesting a levy for them to pay”.

The NASGP will shortly be writing to all it’s 1,300 members and 70 groups urging them to take up this offer, and has already been able to notify 250 members via it’s email cascade system.

The NASGP has already notified all LMCs that we can provide a free list of contact details of all their local NASGP members by writing to NASGP NATIONAL NP DATABASE at the address below.

All GPs, whether non-principals, principals or registrars, are welcome to join the NASGP. For further information, write to:
