We're often asked if we can come up with a better name than the term "non-principal" (or as some like to misspell it "non-principle"!). We adopted the name primarily because it was descriptive, being intended to identify and highlight NPs as a group of GPs that had otherwise been neglected by our own medical establishment. Unfortunately though it is rather negative and tends to confuse the general public and media. And the title takes up an inordinate amount of time at meetings and conferences when some bright spark in the audience suggests its time to change it! The problem we have is coming up with a title that suits both peripatetic GPs such as locums and those GPs whose contracts are dependant on an employing practice. But now that NPs are much more in the main stream of general practice, and that we still do find it helpful at this stage to have a collective term, we'd like to know what the current thinking is of other GPs.
