PACT data - what do you do with yours?

Well, if you're a non-principal, the answer is obvious. Unfortunately, by not receiving it, we're loosing out on perhaps the simplest means of producing audit both for our own CPD and to provide as essential evidence in clinical governance and revalidation. So the NASGP has set out to get it. I've copied below the letter which we have today sent to the DoH to get the bal rolling. Watch this space:

"Dear Paul,

PACT data for all general practitioners

I am writing to you as chairman of the NASGP and as the NASGP’s representative on the RCGP’s Revalidation Working Group to request your guidance as to how those GPs who are not working as principals can receive relevant data about their own prescribing. From what I have gathered the main problem involves the fact that GPs who are not working as principals – and we estimate this figure to be in the region of 7,500 GPs or 20% of all GPs – do not have a prescriber number issued to them by a health authority.

Our enthusiasm for receiving PACT data centres on the issues of clinical governance and revalidation. GPs who are not principals (we use the descriptive but rather unfriendly term “non-principal”), and in particular those who are not practice based, are at a distinct disadvantage when providing evidence of objective outcomes from their clinical practise. I hope you will agree that, for non-principals, PACT data will not only provide an excellent means of improving quality but also provide a useful means of participating in the structures and processes of clinical governance.

PACT data is not so much a useful tool for continuing professional development but an absolute essential for any practising GP. I hope you will be able to provide me with your thoughts on how this issue can further proceed and look forward to giving you any further help that we can.

Yours sincerely,

Richard Fieldhouse
Cc Professor Mike Pringle, Chairman RCGP and Revalidation Working Group."

Striving for Quality Personal Learning Portfolio arrives

It's here! The Striving for Quality Personal Learning Portfolio are now with us and are currently being stuffed into envelopes and will be posted on Wednesday 4th August. Again, big apologies for the delay.

There is a slight hitch, in that there is a speling mistake on the personal education (PUNs and DENs) page. Not our fault, fortunately, as the error occured after we did the final proofs. But every cloud has a silver lining. In compensation, Filofax will be sending be sending an additional set of pages for individuals to record reading such as books or journal articles.

Free Personal Learning Portfolio for all UK non-principals

The NASGP will shortly be distributing a free pocket-sized "Filofax" Personal Learning Portfolio to all 7,500 GPs working as non-principals in the UK. This project has been funded by the Department of Health through the Medical Education Unit of the NHS Executive and is entitled "Striving for Quality". The personal learning portfolio was commissioned by the NHS Executive after the NASGP had expressed their concerns relating to the provision of, and access to, continuing medical education for non-principals, particularly in the light of the compulsory nature of both clinical governance and, more recently, revalidation.

"Striving for Quality" boldly tackles all these issues. In two sections, the first offers "Hints and Tips" for medical education for individual non-principals, organisers of non-principal groups and educational facilitators such as GP Tutors and Directors of Postgraduate Medical Education. The second section is a logbook and is sub-divided into areas for non-principals to record various aspects of their education such as personal and group learning, interesting patients, a career portfolio etc. An A4 sized version of the document is already available for download in Adobe Acrobat format (pdf 379kb).
