Dear NASGP,

What a great site!
I’m the GP clinical governance lead for our PCT.
I needed information about NPs. I found it!

Regards,

John Darcy

You've come to this page because you're not a Sessional GP. If you're a patient/citizen/member-of-the-public you then you really ought to be here.

So, now we have your attention, if you are on this page you're either someone big in a PCT/Health Authority/Practice or a GP Principal. Either way, you're most welcome.

You may find these links of interest:

  • Sessional GP Support Teams
    • This is our latest plan - its what Sessional GPs want (especially Freelance GPs) and its what PCTs need (Bromley PCT have had one running for 2 years already).
  • Standardised Practice Induction Packs
    • Don't let your Freelance GPs/new-partners/registrars spend their first few weeks floundering around in the dark. Provide them with this standardised template of all the essential bits of non-clinical information they need.
  • Clinical IT Systems
    • ALL GPs should have a unique and confidential username and password in every practice where they work; in this section you'll find the guidance for this.
    • Need a crib sheet for your EMIS/Vision/GPASS/Microtest/iSOFT system to pass on to your Sessional GPs? They're all here!
  • Complaints
    • If you receive a complaint about a Sessional GP, don't just ignore it! If there's a problem, we want to know about it! See here on how to involve Sessional GPs in local complaints procedures.
  • Managing Poor Performance in Sessional GPs
    • OK, so none of us are perfect. We gave a talk to the RCGP's national conference on Managing Poor Performance in GPs in January 2002.
  • Code of Good Practice
    • It's nice to know you're on a level playing field, and that's why Code's of Practice are so handy - you know more or less where you stand. So why not take a look at this and encourage your staff and your Sessional GPs to try and work to this excellent document, endorsed by the Royal College of General practitioners.
  • Freelance GP Contracts
    • How many times has a Freelance GP turned up, only for there to be 5 minutes of discussion and negotiations because neither of you were clear about what each other expected from that session? See our section on a draft Terms of Engagement for Freelance GPs and practice managers.
  • Sessional GP Groups
    • It can be lonely out there - rare glimpses of other GPs, kept in the dark about local clinical guidelines, don't have a clue what's happening locally. So its great to meet up once a month with other Sessional GPs. If you don't have one nearby, help your local Sessional GPs by setting one up. Simple to do, and we've produced a document especially to help.
  • Performers Lists (previously Supplementary Lists)
    • Confused as everyone else? See our section on lists to hopefully shed a little more light on the matter.
    • Do you need a list of local Sessional GPs? Our registration with the data Protection Act allows us to pass details on to an individual's Health Authority for such purposes. Please write to us on your authority's headed paper.
  • Engaging local Sessional GPs
    • Brent PCT have produced a useful letter which you could adapt for your PCT.
  • Feedback
    • We need to know what sort of things you'd like to see on this site. Please let us know.
