Continuing Professional Development Advisory Board

The NASGP is a core member of the GMC's Continuing Professional Development Advisory Board which met for the first time on January 8th 2002. This advisory board is one of four other boards under the auspices of the GMC's main Education Committee.

GMC Education Committee's 4 advisory boards:

  • the early years of undergraduate medical education
  • the senior clinical years
  • specialty training
  • continuing professional development

The remit of the CPD Board is to advise the Education Committee on co-ordinating the provision of CPD. The Board will not be ‘approving’ CPD programmes or providing them.  Rather, the Education Committee envisages that one of the first tasks of the CPD Board will be to develop a CPD framework which pulls together all the guidance which already exists on CPD and to provide one set of underpinning principles across the profession.

So, we're going to have to trawl through a lot of paperwork and seeking member's views once the Board becomes established. If you feel you can help, we'd love to hear from you.

If there is more we can do to improve this CPD section, please send us your ideas.

GP Non-Principals and their CPD Activity

  • NASGP member Simon Morris conducted a survey of non-principals in Reading earlier this year.

The objectives included collecting information on the type & amount of activities undertaken & how these are chosen. Data was also collected on factors that help or hinder educational activities.

The results describe a group of doctors who are undertaking a considerable amount of educational activity but who are unprepared for appraisal or revalidation. They are largely unaware of the support available for their CPD or do not understand how to go about identifying their own educational needs.

Most felt guilty that they should do more CPD although the annual activity recorded was far in excess of the traditional PGEA level of 30 hours pa. For this group the importance of family commitments outweighs other considerations in planning CPD.

The experiences of this group were reviewed against the key recommendations of The Standing Committee on Postgraduate Medical and Dental Education 1998. All of these recommendations remain as significant unresolved issues.
