Here's are some comments so far...

Comment

  • "A really good idea to try to really define what the work is going to be. The form’s comprehensive and it needs to be. I would like to see a space for the agreed fee, and for how and when the fee will be paid.

One pitfall that the form throws up is this: What if a Locum agrees to a job over the phone, but then when a form comes through (maybe just a couple of days before the job) s/he realises that far too much is expected? Really the time to see the full details of the job is BEFORE signing up to it. I’m not sure how this would be done.... but since we’re trying to solve the problem (of misunderstanding) here it needs to be thought about I guess."

Action taken

  • Line explaining to practice manager in introduction to complete the form as soon after initial booking as possible and send to locum.

Comment

  • Comments: It would be useful to give an average expectation that there should be of a session/ locum i.e.. 18 ( or 20/22) patients and 2 to 4 visits and maybe that the practice will be asked for reimbursement if excessive amounts of work are given. To specify a maximum of ‘extras’ is also useful because any no. of extras added onto a surgery is not really acceptable.

Mentioning provision of emergency drugs is useful as no practice considers this (that I know of anyway).

Action taken

  • Extra space provided for "free-text"

Comment

  • Sections on extra, visits and administration don't flow. The use of square bullet points suggests the boxes should be ticked - no bad thing - but when multiple stems this becomes over complicated. Suggest remove some of the tick-boxes (either headings or sub-headings)! Also, what penalty for locums if they cancel without notice?

Action taken

  • Fresh look taken at extra/visits/administration. Locums who cancel without notice and for no good reason must realise that they are contravening the General Medical Council's guidelines on Good Medical Practice (section 41 "Taking up appointments: You must take up any post, including a locum post, you have formally accepted unless the employer has adequate time to make other arrangements")
